ELECTRONIC DISCUSSION GROUPS

Communicating with Electronic Discussion Groups

There are a variety of electronic discussion groups, mailing lists and electronic conferences on the Internet. These groups are generally used to share information, communicate ideas, ask questions and solve problems on specific topics. Mailing lists are accessed via email. Lists come and go as interest in them rises and falls.

TYPES OF LISTS

Some lists are moderated, and a human monitors the messages that are added to the list and distributed to the group. Some lists are unmoderated and every message submitted is included.

Many lists are handled by a computer program called Listserv, so many of the lists are called "listservs." Other programs are also used, including Majordomo and Listproc.

LISTSERV ADDRESSES

Listserv Addresses

Each list generally has two addresses:

  1. The Listserv host address: Use this to subscribe, unsubscribe. It usually begins with "listserv" and may look like this:

  2. listserv@host.domain

  3. The listname address which is used for posting/sending messages to the list.

  4. listname@host.domain

HINTS

  • An active list can send you numerous messages each day. It is smart to only subscribe to one or two lists at a time to avoid getting too much email.
  • Listserv servers are not case sensitive.

SUBSCRIBE/UNSUBSRIBE

Subscribing to a Mailing List

Each mailing list will have unique instructions for subscribing and unsubscribing. Using your Email, you generally send a message to the listserv or mailing list host address. The Subject line is usually left BLANK! The commands must be typed in EXACTLY according to the instructions.

Note: Be sure to save your first message from the list. It will have important information on unsubscribing, posting, etc.

Unsubscribing - Getting off the list!

To unsubscribe from a mailing list, you usually use your email to send a message to the listserv or mailing list. The Subject line is generally left BLANK! The commands must be typed in EXACTLY according to the instructions.

If you want to find a mailing list on a topic of interest to you, you can search for an appropriate list using one of these tools:
