NAVIGATING A WEB BROWSER

There are many ways to navigate in a web browser:

Use the Hyperlinks
Use the Menus
Use the Toolbar Buttons

Using Hyperlinks

What are Hyperlinks?



Hyperlinks are indicated by highlighted or sometimes underlined text and connect you to another resource (document, image, sound, video, etc) on the Internet.
Using Menus

Some of the more important menu items are:

  • File Menu, New Window - opens a new window.
  • File Menu, Open - allows you to type in URL or document for the browser to open.
  • File Menu, Save As File - saves a web page to a location you specify.
  • File Menu, Print - prints the page you are currently viewing.
  • Edit Menu, Find on this page - searches for an item you specify, such as a word or phrase.
Using Toolbar Buttons

Toolbar buttons most often used:

  • Back - to return to the last page you viewed.
  • Forward - to view a page you viewed before clicking on the Back button.
  • Home - to return to the page that appears each time you open the web browser.
  • Search - to gain access to a number of search providers.
  • Stop - if a page you are trying to view is taking too long to open.

Using the Address Box or Location Field

What are the Address Box (Internet Explorer) and the Location Field (Netscape)?

  • Displays the URL address of the site you are viewing
  • Allows you to go directly to a site on the Internet

    • Enter the full URL (Uniform Resource Locator) address in the Address box and press the enter/return key.

Using Favorites or Bookmarks

What are Bookmarks (Netscape) or Favorites (Internet Explorer)?

  • Save links to useful resources
  • Create your own custom menus
  • Add sites by opening the Favorites Menu and selecting Add To Favorites
  • Select Organize Favorites (or Go To Favorites) from the Favorites menu to organize your list

Using Keyboard Commands

Simple keyboard shortcuts can help you navigate quickly:

Ctrl + c = Copy text; highlight text to copy first.
Ctrl + v = Paste text; pastes copied text at point where cursor is.
Ctrl + f = Find in page; search for a word or phrase within a paste for quick access.
Ctrl + n = Open new window; an additional new window will open without closing the current one.
Ctrl + h = Open history; view a list of pages you have recently visited.
Alt + tab = Alternate between open windows.
